Project Description

Brasstown Bald mountain is the highest point in Georgia at a height of 4,784 feet above sea level offering a sweeping 360 degree view of the surround landscape. The Brasstown Bald visitor center is open daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM with shuttles running to and from the parking lot to the summit. The visitor center has a gift shop, a 15 minute movie, and various exhibits including 2 animatronics! After hours the summit can be reached via the 1.1 mile summit trail that goes through the forest to the top of the mountain to the observation tower. Brasstown Bald’s weather due to elevation is considerably cooler than surround areas so plan to bring a jacket accordingly.

We arrived around 6:00 PM and made our way up the summit trail in about 20 minutes. The view from the top of the visitor center is nothing short of breathtaking even before the sunset. The colors on the horizon at sunset from this elevation were phenomenal and completely surrounded our field of vision looking west. Even after the sun dropped below the horizon the sky continued to glow red for nearly an hour. The stars came out and the Milky Way slowly came into visibility offering a different but equally impressive display.

Across the North Carolina state line, immediately to its north, is Brasstown, North Carolina. On a clear day, it is possible to see the tall buildings of Atlanta from the summit.
